In April 2020, Kawauchi found a swallow's nest near his home and began photographing the swallows raising their young there.
A swallow's nest built on the eaves, parent swallows flying in the sky in search of food, baby swallows opening their mouths as wide as they can in anticipation of their parent's return, plants sprouting, and sunlight shining brightly.

Kawauchi's photographs, which capture the simple strength of the life that continues unabated no matter what the situation, as if they are quietly observing it, seem to bring a moment of refreshment and courage to those of us who are forced to live unsettled days under various restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The book also includes a new essay by ornithologist Guilhem Lesaffre, "A Few Grams of Elegance," making it a fascinating read about the ecosystem of swallows.
