Kikuji Kawada's photo book "Map" is renowned as a milestone in the history of Japanese photography.
This photo book, designed by renowned graphic designer Kohei Sugiura, was first published in 1965 and has been reprinted in 2005 and 2014.
In the fall of 2001, the New York Public Library acquired an extremely rare maquette of "Map." The maquette was hand-made by Kawada and contains nearly identical works to those in the photobook, but with variations in the cropping, tonality, and orientation of the images.
The biggest difference is that it is bound in two volumes, and is nearly twice the size of the published book. The photographs are pasted together using very thin photographic paper for copying. Unlike the double-page spread format of the published book, each image appears in a continuous sequence with sharp cut-offs.
This book is a collection of works that are precise reconstructions of the maquettes from these two books.
