The first collection of works in Japan that explores the appeal of lesser known female architects
Born in Rome, Italy, Lina Bo Bardi (1914-1992) studied architecture and gained practical experience in Italy before moving to Brazil after the war, where she is a female architect who contributed to the modernization and democratization of Brazilian architecture. In contrast to the national projects of Oscar Niemeyer (1907-2012), who built the foundations of Brazilian modernist architecture, Lina pursued open architecture, thinking together with people for the people who would use the architecture. Her work also combines the theory of modern architecture with the indigenous charm of Brazilian culture.
This book covers a wide range of Lina's creative activities, including her debut work "Glass House," her representative works such as "São Paulo Museum of Art," "SESC Pompeia Cultural Center," and "Teatro Officina," as well as furniture, curation, stage design, and planting design. It is packed with valuable materials from that time, such as Lina's own drawings and notes, as well as new architectural photographs taken specifically for this book. It also includes a preface by Andrea Correa do Lago, an architectural critic and Brazilian ambassador to Japan, and a conversation between two world-renowned architects, Kazuyo Sejima and Yoshiharu Tsukamoto.
This is the definitive collection of Lina Bo Bardi's works, which reevaluates her energetic and free-spirited life and works from a variety of perspectives and places her in the contemporary world of architecture, based on her belief that "creation must be for the purpose of building a free world for people."
