The long-awaited second volume of the definitive edition that fully expresses the beauty and craftsmanship of traditional architecture!
"The Form of Japanese Architecture II" was published by TOTO Publishing in 2017.
This large-format photo book is the second of a two-volume series that was created by architect Yutaka Saito over many years to capture the finest examples of Japanese architecture from each era, from ancient times to the early modern period.
This book features 23 buildings, starting with Zen architecture, which had a major influence on Japanese architecture, and spanning the Muromachi, Momoyama, and Edo periods up to the early Meiji period.
The book features a wealth of photographs that showcase a variety of extremely valuable architectural heritage sites, including the Golden Pavilion, the Silver Pavilion, and the Ryoan-ji Hojo, which are representative of the garden architecture of the ancient capital of Kyoto, masterpieces of tea houses such as Tai'an, Jo'an, and Koho'an, Katsura Imperial Villa, which is considered the pinnacle of sukiya style, and the Yoshimura House and the Yoshijima House, private homes designated as Important Cultural Properties. These sites were photographed from the clear, unique perspective that only an architect can have, and are presented in a wide range of photographs.
The bilingual Japanese-English text provides easy-to-understand explanations of the historical background, characteristics, and highlights of each building through explanatory pages and detailed photo captions, comprehensively presenting the appeal and value of Japanese architecture with unprecedented depth and information.
This is a truly moving book that captures the essence of Japanese architecture.
