Yoshiko Okanoue, who produced graceful, disturbing and fantastical collage works in the 1950s, has been attracting more and more attention in recent years. The large retrospective exhibition "Yoshiko Okanoue Photo Collage: Miracle of Silence," being held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum from (Sat), January 26th to (Sun), April 7th, is also attracting a lot of attention.
In late February, Kawade Shobo Shinsha published a new collection of Toshiko Okanoue's "words" and "collages," entitled "Beautiful Moments: The Essence of Toshiko Okanoue."
To commemorate this publication, we will be holding a talk event with Kunio Iwaya, author of the commentary at the end of the book and a leading expert on surrealism, to shed light on the appeal of Yoshiko Okanoue once again.
Born in Kochi in 1928, Yoshiko Okaue began making her own collages while studying at Bunka Gakuin in Tokyo, using materials from magazines such as "VOGUE" and "LIFE" left behind by the occupying forces. Her work was recognized by Shuzo Takiguchi, and she held two solo exhibitions at the Takemiya Gallery. However, she only made collages for seven years, starting at the age of 22, and then she retreated from the art world, and her existence was almost forgotten.
However, after a retrospective was held in Tokyo in 2000, his work was reevaluated, and his works have been exhibited and collected both in Japan and abroad. His works, which are endowed with natural sensibility and technique, are now captivating many new audiences.
"Beautiful Moments: The Essence of Toshiko Okanoue," recently published by Kawade Shobo Shinsha, is a collection of selected works by Toshiko Okanoue, consisting of her representative works, poems, handwritten texts, and words from interviews. After the war, in an era when freedom came to women, Toshiko Okanoue was passionate about creating in search of her own path. From the beginning of her work to the present, her words about women's freedom and creativity continue to resonate in our hearts beyond time.
At the talk event, Iwaya Kunio, who is well acquainted with Okaue's work and contributed a commentary to the book, "The Distant Journey of Okaue Yoshiko," will retrace the author's steps and thoroughly unravel the secrets and appeal of the work.
We look forward to your participation.
