nullus
This Latin word literally means zero (zeo) or nothing (none), but by writing "nullus non (not zero)" instead of "nullus = zero", it becomes a word that means "everything". In addition, both the programming language "null" meaning "nothing" and the artistic movement and group zero "nul" have their origins in the Latin "nullus".

This exhibition explores the infinite possibilities of "white (non-color)" through the works of three artists. Kuroda Taizo, a leading Japanese ceramist, has transcended the boundaries of ceramics, elevating porcelain to conceptual art. Meanwhile, Piero Manzoni, a leading European conceptual artist, has discovered a new artistic medium by using Chinese clay, originally used for ceramics, as a canvas. Enrico Castellani was captivated by Manzoni's white, and created "paintings of light." The two teamed up to launch an avant-garde art magazine. This exhibition focuses on the unique journey of these three artists into the abstract world, transcending conventional traditions.
In Kuroda, everyday objects such as vases and large tables are transformed into abstract perspectives. Manzoni attempts to liberate painting with his “achrome” series, which he creates using clay to create pictures. Castellani goes one step further, eliminating the intervention of the artist’s hand and giving the white canvas a three-dimensional quality to create works that express the shadows and light of the light.
White reincarnates in various forms. We hope that through this exhibition, you will enjoy the ultimate "world of white" created by three artists from the East and the West, woven together by this single neutral color that has the power to eliminate all interference.

[Artist Profile]
Taizo Kuroda (1946-) Shiga Prefecture
Kuroda is one of the most important artists in the field of Japanese contemporary crafts. He began his training in Canada in the 1970s, and returned to Japan in 1981 to study under the master ceramicist Tatsuzo Shimaoka, who later became a Living National Treasure. Kuroda was more fascinated by the beauty of white porcelain from the Yi Dynasty than by its unusual shapes and decorative designs, and around 1992 he began creating white porcelain that was fired at high temperatures and without glaze. Pure white porcelain clay is known to be difficult to handle by hand and to pull on a potter's wheel. Moreover, it is the most difficult to create the simplest shapes. For the past 20 years, Kuroda has dedicated himself to creating white porcelain, and has exhibited his spiritual creative process not only in Japan but also in New York, Basel, and Korea. His works continue to attract the attention of many artists, art critics, and collectors.

Piero Manzoni (1933-1963) Italy
A representative Italian artist of the 20th century. Self-taught, in 1957 he produced a series of all-white paintings entitled "Achrome" (non-color) using a variety of materials. This asserts that the white surface is simply "white" with no further meaning or value, and that it can become anything freed from all material limitations. In 1961 he also engaged in anti-art activities, selling cans filled with 30g of his own excrement in a can entitled "Artist's Shit" for the market price of 30g of gold. He is also known for his involvement with the internationally active Group Zero.

Enrico Castellani (1930-2017) Italy
He studied sculpture, painting and architecture at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Belgium before returning to Japan. After returning to Japan, he founded the avant-garde art magazine Azimuth with artists such as Piero Manzoni while continuing to create works, and launched the gallery Azimut, introducing artists such as Group Zero, Yves Klein and Robert Rauschenberg. In order to remove other elements from painting and pursue the expression of the "surface", he presented his "relief-like black surface" in 1959, in which the canvas was made to ripple by hammering nails into a wooden frame to create a pattern, which was later called "painting of light". In 1964, he exhibited his work at the first Venice Biennale, and has since held numerous solo exhibitions in Japan. In 2012, he was awarded the Praemium Imperiale in Memory of Prince Takamatsu. He was an admirer of Lucio Fontana, and was a major influence on many artists, including Donald Judd, making him an indispensable figure in unraveling art history.
