Toru Narita
1929 (Showa 4)
Born in Kobe City on September 3rd. After moving to Aomori Prefecture in April 1930, he burned his left hand while grabbing charcoal from the hearth. He spent his elementary and middle school years in Hyogo Prefecture again, where he experienced an air raid. He was in Aomori Prefecture when the war ended. After graduating from Aomori Prefectural High School, he studied under painter Abe Gosei and sculptor Kosaka Keiji.
1950 (Showa 25)
He entered the Western Painting Department of Musashino Art School (now Musashino Art University) and switched to the Sculpture Department in his third year, studying under Takaji Shimizu.
1954 (Showa 29)
He entered the world of film art after working a part-time job helping out on the set of the Toho film "Godzilla." He continued to exhibit his work as a sculptor at the Shinsakusen Exhibition (from the 19th Exhibition in 1955 to the 35th Exhibition in 1971), while also working on many special effects scenes for films.
1960 (Showa 35)
He worked as a special effects art director at Toei. In 1962, his work Yata won the New Artist Award at the 26th New Production Exhibition, and the two became associates.
1965 (Showa 40)
He signed a contract with Tsuburaya Special Effects Productions and was responsible for the design of monsters, aliens, and mechanics for "Ultra Q," "Ultraman," "Ultra Seven," and "Mighty Jack," as well as all special effects.
1968 (Showa 43)
He left Tsuburaya Productions and was subsequently involved in a wide range of display design and special effects for stage, television and film.
1969 (Showa 44)
Mo Bull Co., Ltd. is established.
1970 (Showa 45)
He designed the Tree of Life inside the Tower of the Sun, designed by Taro Okamoto, for the World Exposition in Japan.
1972 (Showa 47)
Responsible for character design and other special skills for "Charge! Human!!".
1983 (Showa 58)
Held a solo exhibition at Roppongi Annex. Published a collection of his works through Asahi Sonorama.
1990 (Heisei 2)
Created the "Demon Monument" in Oe Town, Kyoto Prefecture (now Fukuchiyama City).
1991 (Heisei 3)
Opened Gallery Uwa in Ginza, Tokyo (until 1992).
1994 (Heisei 6)
Created the relief "Demon Illusion" for the Kitakami City Demon Hall.
1996 (Heisei 8)
Film Art Publishing published "Special Effects and Monsters: My Sculptural Art" and "Special Effects Art."
1999 (Heisei 11)
His works were exhibited at "Japan Year Zero," an exhibition organized by Noi Sawaragi and held at the Contemporary Art Gallery of Art Tower Mito. In the same year, Aomori Prefecture purchased 189 original Ultraman-related designs. These became part of the collection of the Aomori Museum of Art, which opened in 2006.
2002 (Heisei 14)
He passed away on February 26th due to multiple cerebral infarctions at the age of 72.
