Specification Understanding the most important painter of our time
The long-awaited publication of Japan's first full-scale art book
Richter explores the "principles of image formation" by which people see and recognize things, working freely between the realms of "abstract" and "concrete" expression, using a variety of materials from oil painting to photography, digital prints, and glass. He continues to explore these principles within the complexities of society, history, individuals, and art.
This book is an innovative attempt to decipher Richter's ever-changing expression through multifaceted discussion based on "keywords," a wealth of documentary photographs, overseas papers, interviews, etc. The publication includes approximately 140 images ranging from early works to the latest drawings, centered on Richter's treasured works, including "Birkenau" (2014), which is being shown in Japan for the first time and is themed on the Holocaust, and which can be said to be Richter's pinnacle of artistic achievement.
*This book will be published as the official catalogue of a major exhibition looking back at Richter's artistic career spanning 60 years, as he turns 90 years old.
*The official catalog sold at the museum has a "venue-exclusive cover" and has different specifications from the one sold in general circulation (the contents are the same).
