This is a collection of photographs by American artist Karla Williams. The young, queer, black woman brings together a series of self-portraits that intimately explore the realm of her own possibilities. The works in this collection were produced between 1984 and 1999, and most of them remained hidden and private for over 30 years.

At the age of 18, while studying photography at Princeton University, she began making the black and white and color self-portraits that would later appear in Tender. Her mind was filled equally with canonical images from the medium's male-dominated history and the posed women she discovered in her father's pornography collection as a young woman. Using her own body, she crafted portraits of herself never seen before. Shot on Polaroid and instant film, her work takes advantage of the near-instantaneous nature of her images and constantly plays with her own expressions and forms. Provocative, playful, sensual, tender, powerful, nasty, glamorous, lonely, funny... the photographs in Tender ignite the raw energy of a young artist on the brink of adulthood and her own burgeoning sexual identity.
