This is photographer Shinpei Yamagami's first photo book, published in 2022. Helix means spiral, and the photo book consists of two series of landscapes, one in monochrome and one in color.
The monochrome series "SPECTRUM", shot in 2014-2015 in the artist's hometown of Kamakura, was born from a thorough engagement with the lives of his subjects. The photographs were produced by thoroughly stripping away personal feelings and memories of the place. The artist says that he gained a lot from the lives of his subjects when shooting these photographs.
The Disintegration Loops is a series of photographs taken in color at the same locations after SPECTRUM. The artist, who has always valued time and light in photography, has also confronted color in this series. The series was created in response to what the artist got from the subjects of SPECTRUM.
This time, the artist has recreated and reconstructed two series from that time, "SPECTRUM" and "The Disintegration Loops," with his current perspective into "Helix." The book is hand-bound, and the two series share the same spine, forming a loop.
