This is a collection of works by Berlin-based German artist Thomas Demand and London-based architecture firm Caruso St John. This book introduces "THE TRIPLE FOLLY," a new pavilion for the Ebeltoft headquarters, created in collaboration with Kvadrat, a leading Danish textile brand. The building was conceived from a simple question posed by Thomas Demand to Adam Caruso and Peter St John of Caruso St John: "Can we turn these into architecture?", based on three found paper objects: a legal pad, a paper plate, and a soda jerk hat. In response, the architects created three follies, habitable, still-life-like spaces on a seaside hilltop, including meeting rooms, kitchens, and flexible living spaces with textile works by German conceptual artist Rosemarie Trockel.
Inspired by the celebrated textile manufacturer Kvadra, Demand began by considering the tent as a quintessential architectural structure with many variations across the contexts of entertainment and refuge, simplicity and grandeur. Translating these concepts into his own artistic language, paper, Demand tasked Caruso St. John with embodying this light-hearted form with his own unique imaginative whimsy. The building, due for completion in September 2022, is realized through a series of harmonious steel and fiberglass structures that create an environment with light and shadow, textured opacity and pleasing transparency.
The book features extensive illustrations of the finished structure, along with in-depth conversations with Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry, American architect Denise Scott Brown, Belgian curator Valerie Verhack, Kvadrat CEO Anders Byriel, architect Emilie Apperce, and the project's collaborators Adam Caruso and Thomas Demand.
*Note: A decorative building in a Western garden that has no specific purpose.
