[Exhibition] Goto Yumeno solo exhibition "Recreate the hidden goddess"
Art | GINZA ATRIUM
2023年09月09日(土) - 09月20日(水)
Artist Goto Yumeno's solo exhibition "Recreate the hidden goddess" will be held from Saturday, September 9th to Wednesday, September 20th, 2023. The exhibition will feature approximately 20 new works, including large-scale pieces, in accordance with themes set for each of the four directions, creating a continuous exhibition space throughout the venue. In addition, three multiple works created to commemorate the opening of the exhibition will be presented.
Goto Yumeno is an artist who graduated from the Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School of Fine Arts with a Master's degree in Oil Painting in 2022 and has been actively exhibiting her works in solo and group exhibitions since her time at university. The unevenness created by layering multiple layers of heavy colors creates a unique worldview that brings painting closer to reality.
This exhibition, which will be the artist's first solo exhibition in Japan in about a year, will feature approximately 20 new pieces, including a large-scale work that is over 3m tall.
The artworks are arranged according to a set theme for each direction in the venue, and as you go around the venue, the exhibition is structured to connect in a continuous manner, tracing the cycle of the seasons and the cycle of life and death. The east represents "spring, air and wind," the south "autumn, fire," the west "summer, water," and the north "winter, earth," and the space was inspired by a magical ritual in which a magic circle is created by matching the directions with the four elements and seasons.

The rock-like raised paint that appears on the painting's canvas symbolizes the way the paint crosses the boundaries of the real world we live in and presses out of itself.
The female figures depicted in his paintings exist in a limbo, at the intersection between heaven and man, painting and the real world, and serve as our vessels or substitutes.

They are the undressed, the unveiled, the buddhists, the festive dancers, the protectors, the sacrificers, the archers, and the guardians of the watchtowers.
They are the hedge-crossers who dissolve contours, burn away, prick with thorns, shriek, administer the rough treatment, and refuse to bow to the gaze.

My approach is to depict the sorrow of those who have been oppressed or hunted in past myths and history, to mourn, scoop up, and reweave the stories, weaving them together in a way that builds a bridge to a world further into the future.
They follow a spiral.
It is a collection that moves around the paintings in a circular motion, going around the four directions and standing in the center.
In the east, the stars are drawn in on the wings of the wind, in the south they are covered with flames kindled by the fire that is the soul of the goddess, and in the west twilight, grey with the amniotic fluid of the goddess drawn by water, steps onto the outer edge of the sky where darkness swirls as it leaves from the north.

Persephone, the daughter of Demeter, the fertility goddess, spends a third of the year in the underworld, and during her daughter's absence, her grieving mother brings winter to the world.
Inanna stands before the gates of the underworld, stripped of her seven veils, while the Maenads dance in inebriated guise and with wild gestures.
The phases of the moon separate and then reassemble with increasing gravitational power; kings are slain and the land is burned, and new shoots are recreated.
In this way, re-staging the play by overlaying the annual seasonal cycle with the cycle of life and death and depicting it in line with the myth should be very effective in treating those who have a tormented heart.
As the same cycle is repeated over and over, the patterns open and close and shift, and the multiple layers of paint build up intricately like a woven fabric, transforming like a mineral.

If the Goddess never dies and remains there forever, then we can never be killed.
If what they are hiding is a goddess, then perhaps the painting is the goddess herself.

Goto Yumeno's Black Maria has been rendered into a three-dimensional work, appearing to have jumped out of the painting.
The original model was made from clay powder, and then the model was replicated using a 3D printer, and each piece was then painted with oil paint. Although they may look like replicas, each piece is an original work.
