[4th] Daikanyama Movie Dad's Room "Ford v Ferrari"
"Ford v Ferrari" is the definitive film on how to improve yourself as a man!
There are many different ways to enjoy a movie. In women's magazines, you often see feature articles about "movies that will teach you love" or "movies that will enrich your life," but in fact, these don't really resonate with movie-loving old men. Old men like movies that have a good "framework of a movie" -- 1. plot, 2. content, 3. performance. In short, first of all, it's about whether the story is captivating to the audience, then how the story is portrayed in images, and finally, whether the actors who are performing it shine.
The 2019 film that combined all three of these elements to create a wonderful film is "Ford v Ferrari" (hereafter "FvsF"), directed by James Mangold and starring two of the biggest stars, Matt Damon and Christian Bale. This time, we will introduce it to commemorate the release of the long-awaited package version.
To use the women's magazine-style phrase mentioned at the beginning, this is the best movie to polish a man. It depicts the friendship and conflict between two men who take on the 24 Hours of Le Mans in their dream car, within the giant corporation Ford. It is more of a fight than a conflict. As the title suggests, it is company vs company, but more than that, it is individual vs organization, and man vs man. How beautiful to see these men taking on such a big challenge!
If you watch the main story, I can say with confidence that this is the type of movie that men fall in love with, but I don't usually introduce the storyline. I also don't know much about cars, so my opinion of this movie may be different from that of car enthusiasts, but the first thing I want you to know is about the skilled director who made this movie, James Mangold.
He is a veteran director with 35 years of experience. He gained attention with Sylvester Stallone's "Cop Land" in 1997. In 2005, he helped Reese Witherspoon win the Academy Award for Best Actress for "Walk the Line." In the 2007 western "3:10 to Yuma," he depicted a male duel (a gun fight, since it was a western) starring Russell Crowe and Christian Bale. He was also contracted by Marvel Studios to direct American comic book movies, and released "Logan" in 2017.
In "FvsF," Christian Bale plays a driver named Ken Miles who has a wife and children, and the film also depicts family ties. Looking at the director's career, he already has the masterpiece "Walk the Line," a film about a married couple, and he presented the father-child paradigm in "LOGAN" (a brilliant application of the film), which was highly acclaimed beyond the boundaries of comic book films. And "Cop Land" is the story of a county sheriff who stands up against a corrupt police organization, and all of the director's specialty tastes are contained within "FvsF." In that sense, this film can be said to be the culmination of director Mangold's work.
Aside from the two main actors, I'll just say one thing. Remember the name of the child actor Noah Jupe, who plays the son Peter Miles. He has appeared in popular films such as "Wonder" and "A Quiet Place," and he also gave a brilliant performance in this film, so he's a boy with a bright future. One of the joys of watching movies is discovering new talent like this.
Speaking of which, Christian Bale was only 13 years old when he made his debut in "Empire of the Sun." We have been following his work for over 30 years now. Watching actors for a long time is the greatest pleasure for movie fans (and directors, too).
The same can be said about Matt Damon. He has become a truly wonderful actor as he has aged. His role as Carroll Shelby in this film is a little less impressive than Ken Miles', which is actually a loss for him as a film actor, but after watching him for a long time, I was deeply moved by the fact that he has reached an age where he can boldly take on the role.
This is also an announcement about the release of the packaged version, but I would really like you to see this movie in a movie theater first. If you watch it on a big screen like IMAX, the satisfaction level will increase even more during the racing scene in the second half. The movie won two Academy Awards, Best Sound Editing and Best Editing, and the effect of these awards is most evident in the second half of the film. We live in an age where movies can be easily watched on DVD, but the fact that Hollywood is able to continue to create movies that are only seen in a movie theater is the true strength of the city.
However, the current social situation does not allow us to go to the cinema, so we ask that you refrain from going out and enjoy Ford v Ferrari as entertainment at home.
